Pumbaa is an emerging artist hailing from Gadigal land who is known for his rich vocals, hard hitting bars and deep grooves. He blends the worlds of reggae, hip hop and jazz in his songwriting, brought together with his soulful vocals and guitar loops to create music that transcends genre.
2025 was a huge year for Pumbaa, having recorded his debut self-titled EP in collaboration with Blue-Mountains based producer Finbar Stuart and an 8-piece live band of Sydney musicians. At the end of the year, Pumbaa had the chance to perform his original music to a captivated audience at an open mic event at Woodford Folk Festival, which led to him being discovered by music industry professionals.
Instantly recognizable for his larger-than-life presence and deep, resonant voice that shifts effortlessly from gravelly spoken word to exquisite harmonization, Pumbaa’s musical storytelling draws people in. Travelling with just a backpack and guitar, Pumbaa formed his musical identity busking on the streets of Australia, Europe and South America, forming creative bonds and picking up like-minded adventurers along the way.
Growing up in a musical household with influences of Bob Marley, Cat Empire and Manu Chao, Pumbaa has crafted a unique sound as a result of years of delving into a vast selection of music from around the world. His early years were spent singing in harmonies with his sisters and teaching himself rhythm guitar. Half Chilean, half Australian, he also takes influence from Latin American rhythms and harmony, particularly after spending time living in South America in his youth.
Pumbaa’s self-titled EP is deeply personal and deals with themes of his passion for music, mental health struggles, relationships and takes a political stand about world conflicts and injustice. It is due to be released this year across all streaming platforms. Having performed his original songs both with a live band and as a solo act at the Factory Theatre, Lazybones Lounge, Sashimi Studios and the Riverina Produce Market, Pumbaa has plans for a regional tour later this year to launch the EP and bring his music direct to his audience.
