Joel Markham is a photomedia artist based in Wagga Wagga NSW, where he uses the content and contexts of daily life to ruminate on ‘big picture’ issues like the human condition, the nature of our journey, and the terrain through which it passes. Joel’s practice is driven by a fundamental need for creative exploration and expression, and from 2016-20, it was complemented by his work as a sessional lecturer at Charles Sturt University’s School of Communication and Creative Industries.
In 2025 Joel’s most recent body of work, Carnival of Souls, was shown in both Temora and Wagga Wagga, and in 2024 he exhibited at Photo Access in Canberra as a finalist in the Canberra Contemporary Photographic Prize. Joel’s other exhibitions include Mystères (2023), Suite 16 (2022), Nocturne (2021), Heaven and Earth (2019), Time and Place (2017), The Makers (2016) and The Quest (2014).
In 2026 Carnival of Souls will be shown at Civic Art Bureau in Canberra, constituting Joel’s first solo exhibition in the national capital.
